January is New Years Resolution Time!!

"How does excess weight effect my pet's health?"

For the new year, help your pet lose those unwanted pounds and be lean for the summertime!!  Many people don't realize how much being overweight effects your pets health.  Your dog loves his treats, and you love to watch him jump for joy when you give him that "little extra something".  "Sure he may have gained a couple pounds" you may say. "But whats the harm in that?".  The truth is, being overweight affects the overall health and well-being of dogs in much the same way as it effects humans.  All that extra weight puts a strain on your dog's body, predisposing your pet to serious health problems, worsening existing conditions and compromising his quality of life.

Cats have the same problems with weight.  And cats are harder to get to lose weight than dogs.  Here are a few dieting tips to try to help your pet lose weight

  • Make sure that all family members stick to the plan.  One person can spoil the results.
  • If excessive food intake was the source of your pet's obesity, plan on feeding the proper maintenance amount.
  • Feed his daily portion in three or more meals, so he doesn't fee slighted.
  • Eliminate all treats, especially from the table.  These are typically high in fat and calories.
  • Feed some canned food to replace some of the dry food.  It will be more palatable and is lower in caloric density (since it's over 75% moisture).
  • Fun, play and games help reduce weight while keeping your pet happy.  They will keep his mind off the loss of food.

By keeping your pet's weight at a normal level, he'll be happier and healthier in a svelte condition.  He'll also run, romp and enjoy life more!

During the month of January get 10% off purchase of diet foods including W/D, R/D, M/D and Calorie Control foods

February is Dental Month!!!  Fresh clean breath for the fresh new year! Come in during the month of February and get 10% off a dental cleaning and dental products!!

Canine Influenza Virus: H3N8-how to protect your pet from this dangerous virus!!

Canine Influenza Virus, also known as H3N8 is a highly contagious respiratory infection that causes flu like symptoms consisting of cough, sneezing and nasal discharge. Virtually all exposed dogs become infected; about 80% develop flu like illness, while another 20% do not become ill.

Because dogs of any breed, age or health status are susceptible to this infection, it is highly recommended that you vaccinate your pet as soon as possible to prevent them from contracting this virus.  The H3N8 virus is likely to spread where dogs are housed together or where dogs come in and out constantly like shelters, boarding/grooming and training facilities, day care centers, dog shows, vet clinics, pet stores!!

Protect your pet against this virus, call today for an appointment to get the H3N8 vaccine.

Recent reports of Dog Flu outbrakes cause us to continue to be cautious.
