January is New Years Resolution Time!! "How does excess weight effect my pet's health?" For the new year, help your pet lose those unwanted pounds and be lean for the summertime!! Many people don't realize how much being overweight effects your pets health. Your dog loves his treats, and you love to watch him jump for joy when you give him that "little extra something". "Sure he may have gained a couple pounds" you may say. "But whats the harm in that?". The truth is, being overweight affects the overall health and well-being of dogs in much the same way as it effects humans. All that extra weight puts a strain on your dog's body, predisposing your pet to serious health problems, worsening existing conditions and compromising his quality of life. .gif)
Cats have the same problems with weight. And cats are harder to get to lose weight than dogs. Here are a few dieting tips to try to help your pet lose weight - Make sure that all family members stick to the plan. One person can spoil the results.
- If excessive food intake was the source of your pet's obesity, plan on feeding the proper maintenance amount.
- Feed his daily portion in three or more meals, so he doesn't fee slighted.
- Eliminate all treats, especially from the table. These are typically high in fat and calories.
- Feed some canned food to replace some of the dry food. It will be more palatable and is lower in caloric density (since it's over 75% moisture).
- Fun, play and games help reduce weight while keeping your pet happy. They will keep his mind off the loss of food.
By keeping your pet's weight at a normal level, he'll be happier and healthier in a svelte condition. He'll also run, romp and enjoy life more!
